Mercury sulfide (Cinnabar, Hingula, Rasasindhur) is widely used in siddha and ayurvedic medicines. India has signed an International agreement to use mercury for medical purposes only and undeniably making lingam is not for medicinal use.
Due to badly placed mercury in my horoscope, I suffer memory retention; I can not forget insignificant virtues of great persons. In the past, last page of Deccan Herald newspaper carried a report that the sculptor who made lingam had threatened court action if his bill is not paid. You may chance upon at least 3-4 facsimiles of dubious donations and bills, if you search google! Somehow, I should forget this news item and put a mercury lingam in that place and forget that mercury so made may kill others in attendance.

Mahalakshmi Vilaasa rasa (used to cure various headaches) with gold has 37300 ug (microgram) of lead, 72100 ug of mercury and 2800 ug of arsenic. Mahayogaraj goggulu (for rheumatic pain) with gold has 7870 ug lead, 4380 ug of mercury and 800 ug of arsenic. I do not say that mercury medicines are bad. Any seasoned ayurvedic specialist will not prescribe these more than fifteen days. Mahalakshmi Vilaas rasa, mahayogaraj goggulu without gold are effective too. There is no risk of damaging your brain and liver. Be wary of mercurial products (paints as well as lingams); of mercurial men irrepressible.
Instead, go for pure herbals without any dangerous elements and to the gurus who do not make mercury lingams nor drink snake venom. At least ayurvedic and siddha medicines are for a good objective. What purpose does a mercury lingam serve?
