My grandfather Sri Narasimha murthy jois was an embodiment of discipline, faith and generosity. He was thriving to gain more knowledge, willing to put more hard work and quite open hearted; He would openly admit his inaccurate judgements (particularly in astrology). This greatly ill-famed Kalasarpa yoga was also point of dispute and discussion between I and my grandfather.
It was passed on (not the yoga but the awareness) to my father. Once he said, "Persons with kalasarpa dosha die of snake bite or have horrible diseases or terrible life" with both eyebrows to the maximum level on his bald head (forehead and head were merged seamlessly!) and hands wide spread, parting lower lips and slender nose, red and thin (I mean a typical face of a hoysala karnataka, making a strong point). Very rarely I and my father entered into astrological discussion; it was a passing reference - he was not an astrologer but an admiring son of an astrologer!

I told him, "It is not bad, I have that yoga". A bomb shell was dropped inadvertently! He was shocked to the core; He could not believe, his son has this ghastly flaw in his horoscope. He dismissed me as 'the young boy with half knowledge. Can there be anyone greater than my father?' We went to the native place in summer holidays and the issue was taken up with my knowledgeable grandfather. "Yes, he has this harmful yoga. Wonder, how I did not notice this earlier!" He also said, "Rahu-ketu in lagna and 7th makes you terribly short tempered. I have heard person with that disposition was a king cobra in previous birth." I laughed and said, "There is none as short tempered as you are. You do not have kalasarpa yoga. You could have been a ram or a gorilla - the black one with a broken tooth!" All of us had a hearty laugh and situation diffused.

The yoga was not in circulation when I was born and hence he did not notice! Now, both the father and son felt let down. The village had fair stock of cobras and they should take care of this young boy. Being the person with this yoga, I too afraid of coming days rather nights well before this incident. I assured my grandfather and father that nothing evil will happen but my life could be difficult. Having the yoga myself, I had mastered various versions, arguments and analysis of horoscopes with this yoga. And I ranted a long list of famous (and good) people having this yoga. On the recommendation of my grandfather, my father agreed that I have 'some' knowledge and can not be brushed aside! If you have kalasapra yoga, it is certain that you will become an expert, if not in any thing, in kalasarpa yoga!!
Do not be afraid, I am not beginning this narrative with creation, churning of the ocean, ambrosia, rahu and ketu and maha vishnu dancing as a damsel. You are overexposed to these broken records to a high degree. So, I refer to rahu and ketu as just two points where the moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic (the apparent path of the sun around earth).
Highly regarded classical texts on Hindu astrology such as Bhrigu samhita, Jaimini sutra, Laghu parasahri, Phaladeepika, Brihat parashara hora shastra, Jataka parijatha and Sarvartha chintamani to name a few, do not name this yoga. This yoga was not known in younger days of my grandfather. He had come across this yoga in a kannada astrology book!
First time he mentioned about this yoga when I was seeking admission to college say, 1976 or 1977. न नित्यं विश्वसनीया मतिः या प्राचिनी। नवमपि चिन्तनं यथासमयं हितकरम्|| (Old thoughts need not be dependable and a new thoughts may be appropriate). Just because pressure cookers are new, we can not say, they do not hold water!
Before we affirm or repudiate, we should examine all interpretations disinterestedly with all the inquisitiveness. Kalasarpa Yoga is formed when all the planets are positioned in one side (this, we will visit towards the end) between rahu and ketu axis. Due to this, the concepts represented by houses that lay inside the axis suffer. The effect of this yoga will broken after certain years depending on variant of dosha, some astrologers hypothesize. (For that matter infancy, childhood, adolescence and career onset are the phases of challenges. There may be more challenges leading to more achievements. This is true with or without Kalasarpa yoga!). If the dosha breaks at certain level, it leads to greater achievements, it is appropriate to call it yoga than a dosha.

The stipulated condition is simple - all the planets that means five of them- should be within the nodal axis. Yoga had not developed well, it was just like this in my grandfather's time. Then derivatives of this equation went on in geometrical progression! If lagna is outside the axis, it could not be kalasarpa yoga. Or is it? The author who made this yoga did not write whether lagna should be inside or out! Rahu and ketu move backwards. If the planets are at the mouth of the rahu, it should be called kalasarpa yoga, some say. Other view is that within axis will suffice, whether towards left of right side. If lagna is outside, then we may consider it as partial kalasarpa yoga. These postulates are made on rasi chart, but the yoga refers to the houses and for this reason it is prudent to refer to bhava chakra than rasi chakra. It is possible you may find all the planets between rahu and ketu in rasi chart but when it comes to bhava it may not be so! Secondly taking a house that span nearly 30º as a block of ice is cheeky. It is possible that a certain planet though in same bhava may have been outside the axis, degree wise. Such minute look at the chart is needed.
In old times when God made the world there was no kalasarpa yoga but when man made a book (of astrology) it was born. Man said to Kalasarpi, "Go and multiply". You do not know this story? I too do not know. Make a good story that you may flourish!
